KERRY 1-11
CORK 0-11
Munster SFC final
If Páirc Uí Chaoimh wasn't splashed with so much sun and colour yesterday we wouldn't have a significant snapshot from this Bank of Ireland Munster football final. Kerry reached the milestone of a 70th provincial title but that is as memorable as it gets.

From the moment Declan O'Sullivan shrugged off Anthony Lynch on 42 minutes to gather Aidan O'Mahony's booming delivery out of defence and swing goalward before beating Kevin O'Dwyer for the game's only goal, an air of inevitability descended on the 'Pairc'.

The Kerry captain's rare moment of inspiration gave his side a 1-8 to 0-9 they would not relinquish for the remaining half hour.

And if Cork were to remain there until nightfall it's doubtful if their young forwards would have developed the knack of loosening the nuts and bolts of a steadfast Kerry defence.

The fluency and sophistication of their attack might have delivered an All-Ireland title in 2004 but it's the hard-nosed conviction of their defence that is preserving an unbeaten nine-match championship run now.

Seamus Moynihan, starting his first championship game for Kerry in over a year, fitted in seamlessly after a quiet start but even the county's most influential player of modern times must bow to a more important presence beside him now.

When Tomás Ó Sé sallied forward to kick his second point in succession and Kerry's last to make the game safe in added time Moynihan checked back to greet him with an approving slap on the back. If Ó Sé keeps performing like this and winning awards he'll find his name in the annual audit for Waterford Glass yet! But he'll need more from those 2004 game breakers like Paul Galvin, Declan O'Sullivan and Eoin Brosnan who were far too anonymous yesterday for the champions' liking and consequently the service to the inside forwards suffered. That trio were among the five players Jack O'Connor replaced in the last quarter.

It's worth remembering however that Kerry struggled to a far greater degree in the province last year before coming to life dramatically for the business end of the championship in Croke Park. That still remains the tantalising prospect.

The warm humid conditions were always going to make playing conditions that little bit more difficult and a game in need of some electricity always found that the current ran short.

With temperatures soaring it was the younger legs of Cork that looked set to prosper early on but by the end they had run out of ideas, belief and energy in contrast to Kerry who were patient and nerveless as they took the home side's best shots before finishing strong.

From the low points of that Munster semi-final defeat to Kerry in Killarney last year and the subsequent collapse to Fermanagh, Billy Morgan had moved the furniture around to create a gleaming new look.

John Hayes, Fintan Goold, Conor McCarthy and James Masters all bobbed and weaved with some menace early on and had pockets of the Kerry defence stretched.

But it was a false dawn for those hopeful of the Rebel football renaissance touted so much in recent weeks. Goold and Hayes were eventually replaced, the influence of McCarthy and Masters diluted and as the game progressed the weight of experience stacked in Kerry's favour became more and more telling as the exchanges grew scrappy and careless.

Still, Morgan will be quietly satisfied that he is heading in the right direction with this team. Graham Canty was forceful at full-back, Gary Murphy did better on Cooper in the first half than Niall Geary had done in the second, Noel O'Leary was tireless going forward and tracking back, Philip Clifford made a big impact on his second half introduction while Nicholas Murphy and Derek Kavanagh consistently emerged with more ball. That's not an indictment of Darragh Ó Sé who looked under pressure early on but found new reserves of energy in the second quarter and emerged as one of Kerry's better players. Cork were that bit more clinical in the first half but significantly they never threatened goals as Mike McCarthy and Tom O'Sullivan played smart in the wide open spaces around them.

Micheal Ó Croinin was withdrawn to play a deeper role but never got into the game and it was Hayes who carried the biggest scoring threat, popping a point after two minutes to add to McCarthy's opener after just 15 seconds. Cork held a two-point lead on six different occasions in the first half and were three points clear on 33 minutes when Hayes punished a bad mistake by Galvin.

But Copper finished from smart approach work by Tomás Ó Sé and Dara O Cinneide before Mike Frank Russell pulled the trigger after three wides to leave just a point, 0-8 to 0-7, between them at the break.

The Cork support among the 32,000 attendance was lifted briefly again when Ó Croinin pointed a free after Hayes was fouled but they scored only two more points in the remaining 36 minutes as their attack lost it shape.

A superb Cooper pass to Hassett set up Darragh Ó Sé for a key score before O'Sullivan's goal completely changed the texture of the match.

Clifford's arrival signalled a new point of attack for Cork and he delivered a fine point but by then the heat had taken the sting from the game. With the pace slowing by the minute Kerry were always going to survive.

Third Round
Kerry 0-10 – 0-09 Derry
Ground: FitzGerald Stadium, Killarney
Attendance:5000
Referee: Michael Collins, Cork
Points for Kerry: B Sheehan 0-06, 0-03f, 0-01 '45', S O'Sullivan 0-02, K Donaghy 0-01, P O'connor 0-01
Points for Derry: Hinphey 0-01, J Conway 0-01, E Muldoon 0-02,0-01 '45', P Bradley 0-05, 0-01f, F McEldowney Red Card

Bryan Sheehan came good at the death for Kerry to net a valuable 0-10 to 0-9 win over a gritty Derry side in an entertaining NFL Division One clash at Killarney.
Sheehan was a very influential performer for the Kingdom with his injury time free and the expert defensive work of Marc O Se key to the hosts' triumph.
It took Paddy Bradley just 15 seconds to make his mark with a typically clinical finish. Less over a minute later, it took a great save from Kieran Cremin to deny Mark Lynch a quick-fire goal.
It wasn't until the 5th minute that Kerry opened their account when Sean O'Sullivan pointed into the teeth of the wind but another point from Bradley in the 7th minute left the northerners sitting pretty on the back of a 0-3 to 0-1 lead.
Kerry gradually improved and trailed by just the odd point in five after Darren O'Sullivan set up Kieran Donaghy for a neat effort after 12 minutes.
Derry then got a let-up when Paul O'Connor saw his point-blank shot deflected off the post by the advancing Derry 'keeper.
Kerry began to go through the gears and a 43 metre free by Bryan Sheehan levelled matters at 0-3 apiece with 18 minutes on the clock.
However Paddy Bradley's trusty left foot one minute had the northerners back in the lead in the 26th minute before Donaghy set up Paul O'Connor for the leveller (0-5 apiece) one minute later.
Wind-backed Derry then suffered a severe setback when Francis McEldowney was dismissed in the 34th minute but still managed to go into the dressing-room, 0-6 to 0-5 to the good at half-time.
Kerry boss Pat O'Shea decided to switch Marc O Se on Bradley for second half (in lieu of Tom O'Sullivan) and Bradley managed to add just one point to his personal tally in the second half.
Within one minute of the restart, Sean O'Sullivan did well to level matters for Kerry but in the 44th minute it took a brilliant save - at the expense of a point - from Kerry 'keeper Kieran Cremin to deny Liam Hinphey a goal.
The influential Bryan Sheehan then popped up with two successive frees to make it 0-8 apiece with 56 minutes on the clock.
Sheehan proved a key player for Kerry on the day and on the hour mark his converted '45 gave his side the lead (0-9 to 0-8) for the first time in the match.
However back came Bradley with a fine levelling point but an injury time converted free from Bryan Sheehan - after Kieran O'Leary was fouled - was all the Kingdom needed to scoop the spoils.
Kerry - K Cremin; M O Se, T O'Sullivan, P Reidy; T O Se, A O'Mahony, D Bohane; S Scanlon, T Griffin; D O'Sullivan, B Sheehan (0-6), S O'Sullivan (0-2), K O'Leary, K Donaghy (0-1), P O'Connor (0-1).
Derry - B. Gillis; K. McGuigan, N. McClusker, F. McEldowney; L. Hinphey (0-1), M. McBride, M. McIvor; F. Doherty, J. Conway (0-1); M. Lynch, B. McGoldrick, E. Muldoon (0-2); C. Devlin, P. Bradley (0-5), C. Mullen.
Ref - M Collins (Cork)
Kerry's Bryan Sheehan held his nerve to point a last-minute free - his sixth point of the day - to end Derry's unbeaten NFL run in Killarney. Derry won the toss and after playing with the wind at their backs, led 0-06 to 0-05 at half-time with All-Star Paddy Bradley notching four points.
The Oak Leafers suffered a considerable blow in first half injury-time when Francis McEldowney was red carded for his part in a melee. The sides were level five times in all but Kerry came good thanks to Sheehan's accuracy in front of goal. The All-Ireland champions made a sluggish start to this game and took a while to learn how to cope with Bradley, Derry's attacking ace. A quick free was played into the Glenullin clubman and he was able to turn and swing over a point after only 11 seconds. Derry almost collected a goal from their next attack but, having been put through, Mark Lynch's stabbed shot was saved by Kerry goalkeeper Kieran Cremin. Derry did canter into a 0-03 to 0-01 lead with points from Enda Muldoon, from a '45', and Bradley, from another fetch of a long delivery in, sandwiching Kerry's opener from Sean O'Sullivan. The impish Darren O'Sullivan was then involved in a move that finished with Kerry target man Kieran Donaghy catching a high ball and kicking his one and only point.
After Paul O'Connor hit a shot off the upright, Kerry got back on level terms as the rain began to fall heavily. Sheehan angled over a score from the sideline for 0-03 apiece.
The teams swapped the next four points with Bradley, who was out to the ball ahead on Tom O'Sullivan on numerous occasions, landing two more points to single efforts from Sheehan and O'Connor.
Then came the score that split the sides at the break as midfielder James Conway went on an excellent run for the visitors that finished with his scoring from 25 metres out.
With a number of stoppages, referee Michael Collins had to add on a good deal of injury-time and things got heated when Darren O'Sullivan was knocked to the ground by a combination of Derry players and with both sides piling in, a melee broke out.
When referee Collins cooled matters, Derry corner-back McEldowney was singled out and giving his marching orders for an offence that was far from obvious.
Derry had to alter their defence for the second half and they opted to take corner-forward Ciaran Mullan off and move Kevin McCloy to centre-back.
The switch seemed to be working out as eight minutes after the resumption, Paddy Crozier's side were 0-08 to 0-06 to the good - a Sean O'Sullivan point was replied to by Muldoon and Liam Hinphey.
Dual player Hinphey could and perhaps should have been celebrating a goal in the 43rd-minute but he could not top off a fantastic run forward with the necessary finish and Cremin blocked his shot over the bar.
Bradley's influence waned a little as Kerry moved Marc Ó Sé, 2007's Footballer of the Year, onto the Derry danger man.
Sheehan seemed to grow in stature as he kicked two points on the trot to get Kerry back level at 0-08 apiece.
It set up a fascinating end to the game but both sides were guilty of some poor misses in the final stretch - Bradley and Lynch were off target for Derry while Kerry's Eoin Brosnan missed a gilt-edged goal chance.
After being brilliantly set free by Donaghy's catch and over-the-shoulder kick, Brosnan opted to go it alone as he honed in on Barry Gillis' goals.
However, his decision-making let him down when he ignored the pleas of the unmarked O'Sullivan for a pass and had his shot saved by Gillis.
The resulting '45' was sent through the posts by Sheehan for 0-09 to 0-08 Kerry lead.
Bradley knocked over a simple free at the other end to increase the chances of a draw but Sheehan cracked over a close-range effort of his own, some minutes later, to end Derry's fight.

Mikey Sheehy's lobbed goal, versus Dublin, All-Ireland Football Final, Croke Park, 1978.
In what was described by Michael O'Hehir as "the greatest freak of all time", Sheehy scores a goal for Kerry while the Dublin goalkeeper, Paddy Cullen is arguing with the referee.Mikey Sheehy (born 28 July 1954) is an All-Ireland winning Gaelic footballer from County Kerry in Ireland.
Born in Tralee, Mikey Sheehy played for the Kerry County football team in the late 1970s and 1980s and was considered to be an extraordinary athlete, who could have played a variety of sports with success. He concentrated on Gaelic football and was well rewarded with his choice. He is one of five Kerry footballers to share the record of eight All-Ireland senior football medals in 1975, 1978-1981 and 1984-1986. He was also on the teams defeated in the finals of 1976 and 1982.

Hier nog wat foto's;

I hope Tommy stays but can't blame him if he leaves. It's his choice really.  He won't have to think of anything else in his life but playing AFL if he chooses to move to Oz but if he stays with Kerry he'll have to find a job  and a career outside the sport as well.
I guess it's all about pride in the jersey.

The teenager voted Ireland's best young Gaelic footballer will train with St Kilda later this month as he weighs up a possible move to the AFL.

Forward Tommy Walsh, 19, was last month named the Gaelic Athletic Association's young footballer of the year, so the news that the amateur Ireland could lose him to the AFL is expected to cause consternation in his homeland.

Player manager Ricky Nixon, who helped convince the forward to try his hand at the Australian game as part of his Irish talent-spotting program, acknowledged as much.

"It probably won't make people in Ireland too happy, but he's coming out," Nixon told Melbourne's SEN radio.

"I can't tell you if he'll want to play or stay or if he'll be good enough but he's definitely one of the best talents that I've seen."

Walsh played for Kerry in this year's All Ireland final.

Nixon described him as an athletic power forward "in the mould of a Wayne Carey type" and said he was the most exciting prospect of the large group of Irish youngsters his recruiting team had looked at.

"We pulled off a pretty big coup ... he's previously resisted every attempt to get him out here," he said.

He will come to Australia in a fortnight and train with the Saints for a week, although that does not rule out other AFL clubs recruiting him.

Nixon's program has resulted in several other Irish youngsters currently training or intending to train with AFL clubs.

Conor Meredith and Niall McKeever are currently with Richmond.

Next week, Meredith will train with North Melbourne, while McKeever will spend the week with the Saints.

Another Irishman, James Kielt, will train with both the Kangaroos and St Kilda in coming weeks, while Walsh and compatriot David Moran will try their hand with the Saints.

But Nixon said his systematic recruiting scheme was no reason for the Irish to be afraid that their youngsters would start heading to the AFL in droves.

He said the more likely outcome was that those who came to Australia would be better prepared and suited for an AFL career because they had been more thoroughly tested.

Under AFL rules, if a club reaches an agreement with an Irish player, the club can nominate them ahead of the rookie draft, guaranteeing they are able to recruit them to their rookie list.
