Norwich City heeft meteen al de manager ontslagen. Snellere ontslagen zag ik nog maar zelden.

Nog niet zolang geleden werd de nieuwe trainer van Torquay United al na 10 minuten ontslagen (of nam zelf ontslag, dat weet ik niet meer precies).

Afgelopen seizoen ben ik bij wedstrijden van Portsmouth (twee keer) en Ipswich Town geweest. Twee zeer sympathieke clubs. Beide met grote ambities. De toenmalige assistent-trainer van Portsmouth, Metgod, keek in het programmaboekje van Portsmouth-Heerenveen terug op de inmiddels legendarische thuiswedstrijd tegen AC Milan. Enkele weken eerder had Portsmouth een zeer eervolle nederlaag geleden tegen de Italianen. Dat was slechts het begin geweest, wist hij. Het begin van heel veel moois.

Tijdens mijn bezoek aan Portman Road degradeerde aartsrivaal Norwich. Dat was feest. En dubbel feest, omdat Ipswich een nieuwe eigenaar had. Geen rijke sjeik, maar een zakenman met ambitie. Dit seizoen zou Ipswich een serieuze gooi doen naar promotie.

Ranglijsten kunnen ongenadig hard zijn. Na zes wedstrijden is Portsmouth de puntloze hekkensluiter. Ipswich kwam in acht wedstrijden tot vier punten en staat 23e.

Via een vriend in Manchester heb ik begrepen dat supporters van Man U voor de wedstrijd van a.s. zondag tegen Liverpool er een groot aantal rode strandballen heeft gekocht.....

Newcastle United rename historic stadium sportsdirect.com@StJames' Park

Newcastle United supporters have reacted with anger and disbelief after the club renamed St James' Park, their home for the past 117 years, sportsdirect.com@StJames'Park until the end of the season.

Supporters groups have accused Mike Ashley, the embattled owner, of treating them with contempt and said the decision to rebrand the stadium into "something that resembled an e-mail address", made a mockery of the club.

Derek Llambias, the club's managing director, told BBC Newcastle the stadium would be temporarily named after Ashley's sportswear business until a new sponsor is found. Llambias said that any future naming deal would still include the phrase "@StJames'Park".

"We will showcase Sports Direct until the end of the season. I'm sure we're going to get a sponsor in for next season," he said.

Last week, the relationship between Ashley and the supporters reached a new low when the Newcastle owner announced that he would be selling the naming rights for the stadium. The influential independent website, nufc.com, describing the decision as "the final insult", while Mark Jensen, editor of Newcastle fanzine The Mag, was stunned by today's announcement.

"The idea of turning the history of St James' Park into something that resembles an e-mail address absolutely beggars belief," he said.

Llambias admitted that the way the plan was put to fans could have been handled better, but said the decision was important for the club's future. "We could have worded it better, and that's why we came out yesterday to explain what we're trying to achieve," he said.

"With the renaming it was always going to be whatever brand it was, at St James' Park. For the remainder of this season, we already have sportsdirect.com on the Gallowgate so we'd like to take that branding through the rest of the stadium.

"If this brings in a good chunk of money to the club, that will go straight to the team, so it's a revenue we should look at."

Last week Ashley confirmed that the club's takeover saga had been brought to a close after Barry Moat's bid to buy the club and return Alan Shearer as manager ended in failure. Chris Hughton was appointed permanent manager with a contract running until the summer of 2011.

Die Ashley kwam binnen als de joviale supporter met zijn Newcastle-shirtje elke keer aan, en lekker tussen de supporters in het uitvak. Maar ondertussen is hij nog erger dan al die pratende pakken bij Liverpool, ManU etc.

En ik mag volgende week naar Villa-Spurs, dat belooft wat!
