PSV Eindhoven vs SEC Bastia

Dutch dominance secures European Cup trilogy

Body Text

PSV Eindhoven finished second behind Ajax during the 1976/77 Dutch Eredivisie season, subsequently qualifying for the first round of the 1977/78 UEFA Cup, joined by third placed AZ'67 from Alkmaar.

FC Nantes Atlantique gained the 1976/77 domestic title in France, with RC Lens and Corsica-based SEC Bastia in their slipstream, earning participations in the 1977/78 edition of the UEFA Cup.

The nucleus of SEC Bastia during their epic 70s era composed of notable players like Dragan Džajić, Dutch  'Goudhaantje Johnny Rep, twice World Cup finalist in 1974 and 1978 with The Netherlands, Corsican local boy Claude Papi, François Félix, Jean-François Larios and hardman Charles Orlanducci, the impertubable libero nicknamed the 'Lion of Vescovato'.

The pride of Corsica, the 'Testa Mora' proudly adorning their blue shirts,  toured the European circuit in Portugal, the United Kingdom, Italy, East Germany and Switzerland before their final gigs with PSV from Eindhoven. Sporting Lisboa, Newcastle United, Torino and Carl Zeiss Jena weren't up to match SEC Bastia's dynamism, the Corsican side amassing 22 goals and losing on one occasion only in Eastern Germany.

The brave Corsicans returned from the semi-final first leg in Zurich on the wrong end of a 3-2 result, the Grasshoppers enjoying their sixth straight participation in the competition. Both the Swiss and SEC Bastia were on the brink of booking their maiden final appearance in any European Cup competition.

It's 12 April 1978 in the Stade de Furiani. In the 68th minute the Moroccan centre forward Abdelkrim "Merry" Krimau was put through in the inside left channel by a looping cross from Félix Lacuesta. The Moroccan nodded the leather to local boy Claude Papi who clinically finished from the edge of the six yard box. SEC Bastia held on to their 1-0 lead to book their place in the final of the UEFA Cup on away goals, ending Swiss dreams of glory in the competition.

Just like FC Twente, Philips Sport Vereniging, PSV for short, founded in 1913, were a team for factory workers, inextricably linked with Philips, the Dutch technology company, originating from Eindhoven.

PSV supporters have tagged themselves 'Boeren', translating als
'peasants' or 'farmers', alluding to the 'provincial' character of Eindhoven's periphery and agricultural Brabantian heritage. With a mixture of irony and self-mockery, they cunningly beat their rivals to it. Their derogatory ' Boeren' epithet would have been inspired by entirely different sentiments.

PSV enjoyed a very successful spell in the 70s. The 'Boeren' recorded three domestic titles and two Dutch KNVB Cups. Coach Kees Rijvers, who left FC Twente for PSV Eindhoven in 1972, modelled a formidable new side around goalkeeper Jan van Beveren, Ralf Edström, the Van de Kerkhoff twins René and Willy, Gerrie Deijkers and Willy van der Kuijlen whose powerful shooting abilities earned him the nickname 'Skiete Willy',  as in 'Shoot Willy'.

Goalkeeper Jan van Beveren started his professional career with Sparta from Rotterdam. He left the club in the same year Feijenoord's goalkeeper Eddie Treijtel killed a passing seagull when his clearance struck the avian tourist in mid-air during the Sparta vs Feijenoord derby at 'Het Kasteel'.

Jan van Beveren wasn't the type of goalie who would be tempted to leave his territory, mainly relying on his incredible reflexes and shot stopping qualities. Jan van Beveren has never been spotted clearing a ball or giving away corner-kicks.

Dutch journalist and football historian Matty Verkamman memorizes his style as 'gracious and elegant; athletic and stoic'. Jan van Beveren realised at a young age he couldn't play football. ' I was a born goalkeeper; reflexes, jumping, strength; people are born with it'

David Winner, the author of ' Brilliant Orange' : 'He's considered by far the best Dutch goalkeeper of the 70s; a wonderfully agile 'line keeper,' a shot stopper of the old school'. There are no records of team photos depicting Jan van Beveren because he was immune to gravitation. He's the epitome of a Flying Dutchman.

Having participated in the European Cup, the International Football Cup, the Cup Winners Cup, 'De Boeren' from Eindhoven enjoyed their second UEFA Cup appearance during the 1997/78 edition. PSV had managed to qualify to join the 1971/72 UEFA Cup elite before, sadly marked by a tragic event, involving their Eastern German opponents Chemie Halle.

The modest team from Saxony-Anhalt, Eastern Germany, having been paired with PSV in the opening round, managed a scoreless draw at their Kurt Waller Stadion but cruelly enough there would be no second leg.

In the early hours of 28 September 1971, 11 people were killed and 19 were injured when a fire engulfed the hotel 't Silveren Seepaerd' right opposite the main railway station. Chemie Halle were staying the night here before the return tie against PSV.

With no designated fire exits and no alarm systems in place, tragedy unfolded with trapped hotel guests jumping from their windows on the upper floors into tied bed sheets, held out by rescuers on the lower kitchen roof. In the process, Chemie Halle's Erhard Mosert badly broke his leg. International Klaus Urbanczyk suffered terrible injuries from broken glass and was rushed to hospital where he had part of his right leg amputated.

Young Wolfgang Hoffmann also missed the target, crashing through a skylight and suffering a fatal impact when landing on the kitchen floor below. Needless to say, Chemie Halle instantly withdrew from the competition.

PSV went on, only to be eliminated on aggregate by Real Madrid in the second round, a repeat of the 1970/71 UEFA Cup Winners Cup semi-final. Peculiar of note, the home leg was played at  'De Vliert' in 's-Hertogenbosch . In Eindhoven, the Philips Stadion was handed a ban after the incidents in the UEFA Cup Winners Cup semi-final game on 14 April 1971 when linesman David Barrett was hit by a beer can hurled from the crowd.

In the first round of the 1977/78 edition of the UEFA Cup, Northern Irish Glenavon were no match to the 'Boeren' from Eindhoven, judging by the 11-2 aggregate.

In the second round, PSV proved too strong for Polish RTS Widzew Łódź, bowing out 6-3 over two legs with starplayer Zbigniew Boniek. PSV kept on target of a 100% home and away score by comfortably eliminating West German Paul Breitner's Eintracht Braunschweig 2-0 and 2-1.

Across the iron border, separating Germany in West and East, one goal against a very defensive PSV was enough to hand FC Magdeburg a well-deserved victory. After trailing 0-1 in the 36th minute in Eindhoven, the 'Boeren' narrowly set the record straight with a 4-2 win, ensuring an appetizing semi-final clash with Johan Cruijff's Barcelona.

The Catalans were taking apart during the first leg at the Philips Stadion, defender Jan Poortvliet isolating and neutralizing Johan Cruijff. The final scoreline of 3-0 sparked a desperate siege in the second leg at Camp Nou. Barcelona took a 2-0 lead by Carlos Rexach and Francisco Fortes before PSV's substitute Nick Deacy silenced the Barcelona crowd just after the interval. Carlos Rexach's converted penalty kick in the 66th minute couldn't stop PSV's flirtations with their first European final.

The first leg at the Stade de Furiani took place on an unplayable pitch, conjuring up visions of a mudslide as a result of torrential rain having hit Corsica on 26 April 1978. Before kick-off, a handful of Corsican faithful saluted SEC Bastia by waving pistols in the air. There are no eye-witness reports of migrating seagulls having been killed in mid-air. Despite Bastia's dominance, the ensuing stalemate surprised no one.

In Eindhoven, PSV kept yet another clean sheet, courtesy of the Flying Dutchman on goal. With the half hour mark luring, Willy van de Kerkhof set the Philips Stadion alight. His goal worked as a treat against the fatigued Corsicans. PSV went on to create a series of chances as the game became stretched. In the 67th and 69th minute Gerrie Deijkers and Willy van der Kuijlen sealed SEC Bastia's faith.

PSV became the third Dutch side to lift a major European trophy. PSV Eindhoven's 1977/78 UEFA Cup was stolen from their trophy room in 2000 by Theo Maassen, a nationally renowned actor/comedian from Eindhoven, who was filming a documentary in the stadium.

One year later, Maassen appeared in a live tv show, hosted by famous pundit Jack van Gelder in the presence of one of PSV's sons, Stan Valckx. To everyone's astonishment and out of the blue, Theo Maassen nonchalantly lifted the original trophy from a rucksack and stoically put it on the presenter's desk. Both Van Gelder and Valckx, completely taken by surprise, instantly questioned the authenticity of the relict. Theo Maassen convinced the two it wasn't a replica and handed the cup over to Stan Valckx.

PSV were not particularly amused with the prank and filed a lawsuit against Maassen. Rather than serving time, he escaped with a few hours of community service.

!!!

SEC Bastia vs PSV match programme has become a well-sought collector's item. With the sweeping rain  tormenting the terraces, the soaking wet crowd used their match programmes as disposable umbrellas.
