  • East Anglia Derby (The Old Farm): Ipswich Town en Norwich City

The Football Rivalries Report

1 West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers
2 Ipswich Town and Norwich City
3 Liverpool and Manchester United
4 Portsmouth and Southampton
5 Cardiff City and Swansea City
6 Aston Villa and Birmingham City
7 Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday
8 Bristol City and Bristol Rovers
9 Newcastle United and Sunderland
10 Brighton and Crystal Palace
11 Derby County and Nottingham Forest
12 Blackpool and Preston North End
13 Darlington and Hartlepool United
14 Luton Town and Watford
15 Blackburn Rovers and Burnley
16 Port Vale and Stoke City
17 Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur
18 Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United
19 Everton and Liverpool
20 Leeds United and Manchester United
21 Chester City and Wrexham
22 Chesterfield and Mansfield Town
23 Northampton Town and Peterborough United
24 Bury and Rochdale
25 Manchester City and Manchester United
26 Coventry City and Leicester City
27 Millwall and West Ham United
28 Accrington Stanley and Morecambe
29 Colchester United and Southend United
30 Macclesfield Town and Stockport County

12/02/1994 Nottingham Forest and Notts County
18/04/1999 Cardiff City and Swansea City
10/02/2002 Port Vale and Stoke City
21/02/2004 Leeds United and Manchester United
26/02/2005 Derby County and Nottingham Forest
01/03/2005 Blackburn Rovers and Burnley
16/04/2005 Millwall and West Ham United
23/04/2005 Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United
24/04/2005 Portsmouth and Southampton
30/04/2005 Dundee and Dundee United
20/11/2005 Brighton and Crystal Palace
01/04/2006 Northampton Town and Peterborough United

Vet gedrukt: seizoen 2007/2008

Edinburgh derby is the jewel of game in Scotland
The boom times of 60,000-plus crowds turning up are obviously long gone but there will still be anticipation in the air before tomorrow's Edinburgh derby at Easter Road. More than 132 years after they first met, the clash of the maroon and the green-and-white of Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian remains a jewel of the Scottish game.

Football rivalry is rarely one-dimensional or straightforward, and Hearts and Hibs are a classic case. There are religious, social and geographical threads woven around this fixture which, in our modern fog of confusion, all only add to the spectacle that will take place tomorrow in Leith. Football has a peculiar habit of exhibiting class prejudice and social snobbery, and by tomorrow afternoon's outcome many Hearts' fans will be hoping that events on the pitch will only have reinforced the sociological truth that they are "better people" than Hibs.

This is no Old Firm derby, bleeding at the edges with bitterness and bigotry, but there are extant tinges of that. The Edinburgh derby, in the main, is a good-natured occasion, where the football can often be thunderous and even coarse, though this is beside the point. In such a town of culture and architectural splendour, the Edinburgh derby is one of the great counterpoints of the Festival City.

It is the fans, with their oneupmanships, their own distinctive traditions and world views, who make the Hibs-Hearts drama so fascinating. Hibs, like Celtic in Glasgow, are the immigrant club, founded by Irish Catholics in a city which, unlike Glasgow, is still overwhelmingly Protestant, and many Hibs fans focus keenly on this. And yet, just like those of Hearts, the vast majority of Hibs fans are Protestant, for whom religion is no more than a historic relic.

One of the great distinctions of the Edinburgh derby is the geographical split of the city: Hibs' heartland being clearly defined in the east, Leith and the southside, with Hearts' base being in the west, towards Gorgie, Dalry and Corstorphine.

These are obviously not strictly-defined demarcations but their general reality only adds to the impression that Hibs and Hearts represent social and political tribes.

You often hear about it, too, from the stands.

Hibs fans, like Celtic's, are still seen as the less wealthy, more downtrodden of the two tribes. In one sense, in modern Scotland, this is a self-evidently ludicrous caricature, though it's funny how many Hibs fans still bask in the image.

"I've heard Hibs fans chanting from the terraces, 'Go back to yer bungalows!' and such like at Hearts fans," Simon Pia, the Edinburgh-based writer and broadcaster, and a renowned Hibbie, says. "It is part of the traditions of the two clubs, though maybe watered down today, that Hearts fans saw themselves as a bit superior, a shirt-and-tie mob, almost even petits-bourgeois, while Hibs fans were thought of as more down-at-heel and working-class, really a bit of a riffraff.

Hearts fans used to shout at us, 'Awa' hame, ya Leith keelies'."

Hearts, like Rangers in Glasgow, are the Edinburgh establishment club, with a clamour of football-loving lawyers, bankers and white-collar workers having followed the club down the years.

Today, this is obviously less evident, yet it still contributes to an aura around Hearts. If you get a Hearts fan in an Edinburgh pub after a good bellyful and in reasonable spirits he will happily opine: "The problem wi' some o' these Hibbies, mind, is that they're just that wee bit grubby..."

Hibs, as well as having their outsider's roots, came to be seen as the Bohemian club, the club of thinkers, radicals and some of the arty-farty brigade. In the same way that sometimes in modern Glasgow it is seen as being cool to be a Celtic fan and naff to be a Rangers fan, the cool club of Edinburgh is Hibs.

The late Arnold Kemp, a Scottish writer and former editor of the Herald, was very vocal on the intellectual sprightliness of Hibs fans. Kemp, an avowed Hibbie, was obviously proclaiming such things only in fun, but he still revelled in the fact – and it appeared to have more than a grain of truth to it – that his team were more the team of thinkers, writers and intellectuals. Indeed, of people like Kemp himself.

It is intriguing today to see how true some of this old stereotyping appears to be. You have the socially-conscious pop group, The Proclaimers, and the writer, Irvine Welsh, as well as various Scots actors and artists, who are all Hibs fans. In contrast, some Hearts fans lament the fact that their most famous fan is Ronnie Corbett.

If a time-machine could be invented I would love to go back to the great Edinburgh derbies of the 1950s, when crowds of 50,000 packed into Easter Road and Tynecastle to watch some of the epic encounters. The Famous Five of Hibs – Smith, Johnstone, Reilly, Turnbull and Ormond – have gone down in Scottish football folklore, but the Hearts side of Conn, Bauld ("the King") and Wardhaugh was also a legendary force. These were great days when the axis of power in the Scottish game lay in the east.

The saga of the Edinburgh derby is beguiling, not least for the amazing story of the late Gordon Smith, arguably the man who accomplished the greatest single feat of any Scottish footballer, with an engrained modesty to go with it.

Smith, a member of the Famous Five forward line, won three championships with Hibs only to be released in 1959. A graceful, elegant winger known as "The Gay Gordon", Hearts duly signed him up, and Smith then won a championship medal with Hearts in the famous Gorgie feat of 1960. Released by Hearts after two years, Smith then confounded all those who said that, by now, surely, he was finished, by signing for Dundee and becoming an integral member of their 1962 title-winning side.

What Smith achieved – winning three championship medals with three different Scottish clubs, and none of them Rangers or Celtic – remains incomparable.

Years ago, before an Edinburgh derby, I phoned Smith at home to ask him about his recollections. Modestly, he demurred, saying he wasn't interested in any publicity. Tonight, he would have felt his pulse beginning to race, in the way that only Edinburgh can in the grip of such a weekend.
